Choosing a Nepali name

In many Nepali families, a baby is named at the nwaran ceremony, usually on the 11th day after birth. The priest works out the baby's rashi and nakshatra from the time of birth and suggests a starting syllable, and the name is chosen to begin with it.

Each name here shows its Devanagari spelling, meaning and the rashi its first syllable belongs to. Star the names you like to build a shortlist; it's saved in your browser only.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a baby name by rashi?

In Nepal, a baby's name traditionally starts with a syllable linked to the moon's position (nakshatra) at birth. Each rashi has nine such syllables, for example Mesh: चु, चे, चो, ला, ली, लु, ले, लो, अ. Pick the rashi to see its syllables and the names that start with them.

How do I know my baby's rashi?

The rashi and exact starting syllable come from the birth chart, worked out from the date, time and place of birth. A priest or astrologer usually gives them at the naming ceremony (nwaran). This page lists the traditional syllables; it doesn't calculate a birth chart.

How are names matched to a rashi?

By the first sound of the Devanagari spelling. Short and long vowels count as the same (कि and की), व and ब are treated alike, and a name like लक्ष्मी matches ला. Names that start with a sound outside the traditional table, such as श, aren't listed under any rashi.
